GOTAFE removing barriers to higher education in Merrifield

Local jobseekers will have better access to Skills and Jobs services, training, education, and career counselling, as GOTAFE hits the road in their Mobile Campus, which will arrive at Merrifield City on Monday 27 June 2022.

The GOTAFE Mobile Campus will be located at 270 Donnybrook Rd, Mickleham until Saturday 2 July 2022. It is fully accessible and features a client reception area, private career counselling space, workshop and seminar space, and a community computer lab.

The Mobile Campus team will provide advice and assistance to the local community and industry stakeholders which are facing unprecedented social and economic challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“GOTAFE is committed to playing a lead role in supporting the Merrifield community in responding to these challenges,” said Jane O’Brien, Acting Director Student Attraction and Enrollment at GOTAFE.

“At its heart, the mobile campus works to bridge the gap between our communities and deliver critical employment and education services, regardless of location, access and financial barriers.”

Over the six-day period, local jobseekers will be able to receive personal advice from Career Advisors as well as attend workshops to increase their job prospects and explore study options.

Workshops will cover a range of topics including resume writing, how to address key selection criteria, job interview tips and Free TAFE and Job Trainer information sessions.

Matthew Planner, General Manager Communities at MAB Corporation, said the provision of higher education has always formed a critical part of the vision and delivery pathway for the fast-growing Merrifield community in Melbourne’s north.

“Education and lifelong learning opportunities are key pillars of the Merrifield masterplan. We have always been committed to ensuring the early delivery of a broad range of amenity and community infrastructure in Merrifield and our strategic partnership with GOTAFE presents an excellent learning platform for both local residents and businesses,” Mr Planner said.

GOTAFE will work in partnership with local government and tap into job active networks and financial support services, ensuring a community-centred approach as part of the service delivery.

This project recognises some students are disadvantaged by a lack of transport options which affects their access to education and other GOTAFE services.

The Mobile Campus was made possible by the State Government in partnership with GOTAFE and La Trobe University.
