MARNONG Estate winery and homestead has officially opened its gates to the public.

Located 20km from Melbourne airport in Mickleham, the estate comprises a restaurant and acommondation and will eventually include a winery, day spa and brewery.

The $35 million development has been flagged as a major attraction in Hume, and its 250-seat restaurant Bankvale Run opened its doors to the public on Friday evening.

Marnong Estate executive chef Matt Coates said there was plenty of interest in the opening night.

“We sold out the restaurant for the opening night in just a day-and-a-half,” he said.

“It’s a really exciting time for the estate but also for the local area — we work closely with a lot of local food suppliers.”

The menu offers family-friendly options and a generous spread of meat dishes, such as Tomahawk steaks and slow-cooked lamb shanks.

“The food is really simple, fresh and seasonal,” he said.

“A lot of our meals are designed to be shared, such as our whole roasted chicken with all the sides.”

Other dishes include the wood oven roasted salmon fillet with tahini and a tarator crust, and a roasted winter vegetable pizza.

Mr Coates said the restaurant offered a kids’ menu and welcomed children of all ages.

“We’re happy for them to make noise and play on the lawn,” he said.

“We’ve got a petting zoo with camels, donkeys, llamas and goats too.”

Marnong Estate offers private dining options and caters to weddings and conferences.
