Community precinct update

Active Open Space and Community Activity Centre – Artist’s impression

We’ve been working closely with Hume City Council and other key stakeholders on the masterplan for the education and community hub within Merrifield.

Centrally located at the intersection of Blackmore Road and St Georges Boulevard, this huge 25 hectare space will comprise two primary schools, a secondary school, community activity centre and sporting reserve.

A massive 9.5 hectares of active open space (4.5 times the size of the MCG!) will consist of two AFL / cricket ovals, tennis courts, cricket nets, pavilions, playgrounds as well as a proposed off-leash dog area. We will shortly appoint a lead architect and commence detailed design for this space with an anticipated opening in early 2021.

Hume City Council will soon start detailed design of its community activity centre, which is anticipated to be one of the largest community spaces of its kind delivered in the municipality to date! The centre is expected to encompass kindergarten rooms, maternal child and health services and general community / consulting spaces. The centre is anticipated to be open in mid 2021!

We look forward to sharing further progress updates very soon!

Garden tips from landscape architect Brett Foulis

We are committed to delivering a high quality living environment that marries natural beauty with the best of contemporary urban design. It starts with stunning streetscapes – carefully designed to connect our residents to lush parklands, waterways and community facilities.

Merrifield’s landscape designer, Brett Foulis, Senior Associate – MDG Architects, has these essential tips for new residents looking to create a stunning front garden.

5 steps to a beautiful garden

Watering
Water your garden weekly as a minimum (unless you have more than 10mm of rainfall that week) garden beds can get dry even in winter and if you don’t keep the moisture up soils can become non-wetting (hyrdro-phobic) and difficult to saturate.

Weeding
Pull weeds out regularly so that it doesn’t become an overwhelming chore. Be careful of bringing in mulches or manures which may contain lots of weed seeds.

Mowing and edging
Warm season grasses like kikuyu, are hardy and vigorous but require regular mowing and edging to look their best. Don’t put lawn clippings on your garden or trees as piles of fresh clippings will kill your plants. We recommend putting them in your green bin to be composted by Council.

Fertilising
Apply suitable fertiliser such as Osmocote ‘Long Life Fertiliser’ once every 6 months. Alternatively fork through worm castings or organic compost.

Grass
Seeded or pre-grown turf grass is preferred and has a cooling effect on the ground around your home. Artificial turf heats up in the sun and will deteriorate over time and cannot be recycled (it will end up in landfill). Warranties for artificial turf range from 0 -7 years.

Earthworks commence at Merrifield Shopping Centre!

We are pleased to announce that our civil contractor has now commenced enabling works on-site, paving the way for Stage 1 construction of the Merrifield Shopping Centre to begin the next few months! These enabling works include major earthworks required to create future pad sites for construction of the buildings, along with road access, car parking areas and landscape zones.

Due to open late next year, the $40 million first stage will be anchored by a Coles supermarket and feature approximately 20 specialty stores, such as a pharmacy, bank, post office, bakery, hair and beauty, restaurants, cafés and eateries. The first stage is also planned to include a community space designed to provide opportunities to play or relax with friends and family.

This first stage is an important milestone in delivering on our vision for the Merrifield City Centre, poised to become the epicentre of Melbourne’s north – offering a distinctly modern urban lifestyle with a cosmopolitan mix of shopping, dining, recreation and entertainment options, as well as beautifully designed outdoor spaces to enjoy.

We look forward to bringing you more exciting updates very soon!
