Hume residents living in new developments are a step closer to their first public bus service with a route set to start in December.

Route 525 will service the growing suburbs of Mickleham and Kalkallo, including the Merrifield, Cloverton and Trillium estates.

The new route is expected to run from Donnybrook train station via Mickleham before terminating at Craigieburn train station.

Yuroke state Labor MP Ros Spence said the tender process to secure an operator for the $8.9 million bus route was under way with an expected starting date in December.

“Funded through the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund, the new service will encourage locals to leave the car at home when accessing schools, shops and services in nearby Craigieburn,” Ms Spence said.

Mickleham is Australia’s fastest-growing suburbs with new developments attracting families.

Jo Heafield said they had been lucky to have the Merrifield bus in the interim, however a Public Transport Victoria service would be “awesome”.
